Day 9 Gretna to Mauchline, Ayrshire

It was an early 8am start from Gretna, the overnight rain had cleared and the air was fresh and dry. We set off on the damp road to Annan, passing through many little villages on the Solway Tourist route heading west.
After only a few miles Charles noticed his rear tyre was making a knocking noise, on checking, the tyre had bulged out of the rim and so we stopped to assess the problem.

After striping the wheel down and changing the inner tube, this seemed to partly resolve the issue. After a short delay we got on our way again heading towards the town of Dumfries thinking we would need a new tyre. However after reaching our turn off to Kirkton the wheel had settled back down and so we pushed onto Thornhill to meet up with Alistair and Wendy in their new farmhouse.

The farmhouse restoration project had moved on a pace since our last training run. The old wooden barn was now demolished and Alistair had been doing some tree pruning with the tractor bucket.
It was great to finally meet Callum's new brother, Ewan thank you all so very much for our lunchtime treat of spaghetti bolognaise this was later to an absolute a god send as we needed the fuel to get over the hills to Cumnock and onto Mauchline.

Meeting us as we cycled into Mauchline were Ros, Fiona and Michelle who had travelled down from Glasgow to cheer us on. After a few celebratory photo's and after we caught our breath from a huge uphill climb we headed to the Black Bull for a cheeky drink to celebrate our 74 mile journey from Gretna.

As the girls headed back to Glasgow we said our farewells and went to our accommodation in Mauchline kindly provided by two local vets Ed and Allan of Armour Vets. Neil and Diane had travelled through from Lanark and we all met up at the Dumfries Arms in Cumnock for dinner.

Well our knees are flaming this evening so off to bed to recoup before we catch our morning ferry to Arran.
